How to Prevent Frost Damage to Your Property This Winter

As the colder months approach, so does the increased risk of frost damage to your property. Frozen pipes and other cold-related issues can lead to costly repairs, especially during the festive season when it’s hard to get tradespeople. However, with a few precautions, you can protect your home from winter’s worst.

Here are some tips to help you prevent frost damage this winter:

• Keep the Heating On: Even if you’re away over Christmas, keep your heating on a low setting or use the ‘frost’ mode (usually marked with a snowflake ❄). Alternatively, set a timer for at least an hour a day to maintain a safe temperature and prevent pipes from freezing.

• Open the Loft Hatch: If the weather turns especially cold, opening the loft hatch can help warm air circulate, reducing the chance of pipes freezing in colder spaces like lofts.

• Insulate Pipes and the Loft: External pipes are particularly vulnerable, so make sure they’re insulated. Also, insulating your loft space can help regulate temperature and prevent cold spots from developing.

• Contact Your Insurer Immediately if Damage Occurs: If a frost-related incident does happen, reach out to your home insurance provider as soon as possible to start the claims process and avoid further issues.

By following these simple steps, you can protect your home from frost damage and ensure a stress-free winter season. Stay warm and safe!
